The Commission presented its proposal for a Regulation on General Food law and establishing a European Food Authority (EFA) on November 8 last year. The Commission adopted an amended proposal on August 8, which reflects the Commission's orientations on the discussions in the Council and Parliament during the first reading.
The Second Reading started on September 20. A final political agreement can be expected by the end of 2001, with a formal adoption of the Regulation potentially early in 2002. A political decision on the seat is expected before the end of the year. Four cities are officially in the running: Helsinki, Barcelona, Parma and Lille.
