The issue of field trials and ensuring that GM grains do not mix with conventional ones is at the heart of the frequently ferocious debate on GMOs which has consumed the EU in recent months. Back in April, the biotech industry's credibility took a blow when Swiss biotech company Syngenta admitted that it had inadvertently sold several hundred tonnes of unapproved Bt10 corn in the US for four years (see Europe Information Agriculture 174). The case was seized upon by GM sceptics as proof of the biotech industry's inability to control genetic engineering in practice.
