When they met in Brussels on 8 March, national experts sitting on the Eggs & Poultry Management Committee adiscussed new ways in which the EU can provide support for the European poultry industry which has been badly hit by the avian flu crisis. In addition to the customary trick of raising export refunds which would have very little impact with so many countries closing their borders to European produce, other new options are being considered by the European Commission, including setting up private storage schemes and intervention buying-in of surplus supplies, according to Commission sources.
