GENETIC ENGINEERING : POLAND KEEN TO BE GM-FREE.(rules for genetically-modified organisms)(Brief article)

Poland's Parliament has adopted legislation aiming to ban the marketing of all genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) regardless of whether they are prohibited or authorised in Europe. The measure, which has still to be ratified by President Lech Kaczynski in order to enter into force, would breach EU rules. Attending a conference in Vienna at the beginning of April on the coexistence of conventional and GM crops, European Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel commented that "one cannot ban genetically modified crops from an entire region unless there is scientific evidence that they represent a dangerous for that region".
