The European Commission is hoping for "rapid and substantive" discussions with Moscow in order to lift Russia's threat of an embargo on European animal products from 1 January, Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson told the press in Brussels on 6 December. "I would like to see substantive discussions held without delay before 1 January to ensure Bulgaria and Romania's accession passes without a hitch," he added.

Russian officials threatened the Commission at the beginning of November with an embargo on all European animal products owing to health concerns linked to the entry into the EU on 1 January of Romania and Bulgaria, two countries affected by swine fever.
