CEREALS : FISCHER BOELaPROPOSES TO SUSPEND IMPORT DUTIES.

Further to the positive opinion expressed by the European Parliament on 26 September, the EU agriculture ministers, meeting on the same day in Brussels, approved the European Commission's proposal to set at 0% the compulsory set-aside rate for autumn 2007 and spring 2008. Also with a view to easing pressure on the animal feed market, Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel announced her intention to propose a suspension in customs duties on the import of cereals up to the end of the 2007-2008 season (30 June 2008), as requested in particular by Spain.

According to Fischer Boel, this measure is needed to prevent "serious difficulties" resulting from the drought in Australia, the development of bioethanol production in the United States and higher demand...
