PROTECTED GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION : PRODUCERS OF HAND HARVESTED SEA SALT CALL FOR PROTECTION.

The salt marshes of Guerande, Trapani and Cadiz are areas of high tourism which today require that their economic activity be preserved. The European federation representing producers of hand harvested sea salt once again asked the European Commission, on 16 November, for the possibility of having access to Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. "Faced with growing counterfeit problems, there is an urgent need to benefit from this protection at EU level, as much for us, the producers, as for the protection of consumers," argued Michel Coquard, president of the federation which brings together professionals from Spain, France, Italy and Portugal.
