The EU Council adopted by qualified majority (Italy voted against), on 26 November, a regulation banning the sale and import into or export out of the EU of dog and cat fur and products containing it. Exceptional and punctual dispensations can be planned for educational reasons or for taxidermy.
The European Parliament gave its opinion in first reading on 19 June 2007. The result of the vote in Parliament reflected the compromise agreement reached between the institutions and allowed them to reach an agreement with the Council in first reading.In the case of seizure of consignments of cat or dog furs, the member states will have to take measures to enable such goods to be confiscated and destroyed as well as to irrevocably withdraw import-export licenses from the...
