FISHERIES AND MARITIME POLICY : JOE BORG PRESENTS PRIORITIES FOR 2009 TO MEPS.

A revamping of the common organisation of fisheries and aquaculture markets, the creation of a European maritime observatory and data network and stricter monitoring of fisheries are among the priorities of the annual policy strategy for 2009 presented, on 5 May, by Fisheries and Maritime Policy Commissioner Joe Borg to the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries.

Joe Borg explained that the reform of the Common Market Organisation (CMO-Fisheries) will be based on an assessment of the effectiveness and coherence of the system put in place in 2001, but that since that assessment is under way, he could not foresee what proposals the European Commission would table in 2009.
