COMMON AGRICULTURAL POLICY : HEALTH CHECK PROGRESSES AGAINST BACKDROP OF FOOD CRISIS.

With the question of food security dominating debates in Europe and around the world since the start of the year, the European Commission will be presenting, on 20 May in Strasbourg, proposals for adjustments to the Common Agricultural Policy. This will no doubt be a tough exercise in the context of rising agricultural prices and their consequence, the grumbling of consumers.

In any case, the EU executive has no plans at this stage to retreat on its objective of liberalising the sector further, in spite of warnings and calls for caution, issued in particular by producers' organisations (see box). Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel intends to continue the work begun in 2003 by her predecessor, Franz Fischler, and thus to:
