The enlargement of the European Union will not stop with the accession of Romania and Bulgaria in 2007. The next group to which the EU has promised the possibility of accession is the countries of the western Balkans. On 8 November, the European Commission published its annual reports on the progress made in these countries in terms of stabilisation and association. These reports set the common political and economic targets, although the evaluation of progress achieved is based on each country's own merits.
