JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS/EUROPEAN COUNCIL : SUMMIT GIVES COMMISSION GO-AHEAD ON MIGRATION.

A series of European Commission proposals in the area of migration and asylum, including ones on ways to curb the rapidly growing influx of illegal migrants to the EU, have been tabled by European leaders.
At their summit on 22 June, heads of state and government approved a Commission communication on extending an existing Global Approach to Migration', currently focussing on Africa and the Mediterranean, to include the eastern and south-eastern regions neighbouring the EU. It also urges member states and the Commission to allocate financial means from the Community funds as well as human resources to enable the implementation of the global approach in these areas.
