Vladimir Putin's United Russia party won a large majority in the country's parliamentary elections on 2 December, but international observers said that the poll was unfair and failed to meet democratic standards. "The State Duma election in the Russian Federation on 2 December 2007 was not fair and failed to meet many OSCE and Council of Europe commitments and standards for democratic elections," the joint observer mission of the OSCE and the Council of Europe said in a statement. The European Union called on the Russian authorities to investigate all claims of vote-rigging. "We are aware of the allegations of irregularities [at the vote].
