Sweden intends to serve as an example in the fight against climate change when it assumes the rotating Presidency of the Council in the second half of 2009. Furthermore, it will adopt a very clear position in favour of Turkey's accession to the Union.
These priorities were announced by the Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, on 19 February at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. He was speaking in the context of debates on the future of Europe, launched by the EP the day after the rejection of the draft Constitution. For his future Presidency, the 43-year old politician heading a centre-right coalition will thus focus on the "preparation of a sustainable development policy".
