A report issued in the United Kingdom asserts that there has been a negative economic impact of genetically modified crops in North America. The study was undertaken by the Soil Association, Britain's leading organic organization. The report asserts that gene-altered crops have cost the U.S. economy $12 billion since 1999, due to farm subsidies, lower crop prices, loss of major export orders and product recalls. The Soil Association suggests that the United States lost its share of the maize and soya market once GM crops were planted for export, and the loss of these export markets plus domestic costs associated with GM crops have wreaked financial havok on the U.S. market.
