Roofing contractors are donating labor and materials worth almost a half a million dollars to rebuild moe than an acre of the Pentagon's roof system damaged in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The National Roofing Contractors Association negotiated an agreement with the Department of Defense to rebuild more than 40,000 square feet of slate roof. James Myers Co. of Beltsville, Md., the lead contractor, has been at work since mid-November.

The idea originated with Northern Virginia Roofing, a contracting company owned by a husband and wife team based in Falls Church, Va. The association's executive vice president. Bill Good, is coordinating efforts. The project is scheduled for completion in March.
