One-year wait for top secret clearance: GAO.(Government Accountability Office)

Industry personnel waited more than a year, on average, for a top secret security clearance, the Government Accountability Office reported.

The investigators said the average time to grant a new top secret clearance for a defense contractor was 446 days; updating an existing clearance took an average of 545 days. GAO examined 2,259 clearances that were granted in January and February 2006.

The Office of Personnel Management, which handles background investigations, said more recent data show substantial improvement.

By law, agencies are required to process 80% of clearance applications within an average of 120 days starting in December.
