Telefonica Moviles aims for America Movil in Ecuador.(Ecuador)(Brief Article)

The two leading mobile phone operators in Latin America are battling for control of each market where they both compete, and Ecuador is no exception. Antonio Viana Baptista, the president of Telefonica Moviles, announced that the company would invest US$70 million during 2005 with the goal of dethroning America Moviles local affiliate Porta as the market leader within the next two years.
The capital would be used to optimize the network and expand the network of the mobile operator recently acquired from BellSouth for US$833 million. Porta closed the first half of the year with 1.82 million customers, or a market share of 61 percent, compared to 1.07 million subscribers held by Telefonica or 36 percent market share.
