Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. announced that it has committed to upgrading the optical fiber backbone network of Venezuelan company CANTV. The $7 million project will widen the bandwidth of CANTV's optical fiber network from 2.5Gbps to 160Gbps. The project will commence in H1 2005.
Huawei will be installing DWDM and Super WDM technologies in CANTV's system. The agreement between the two companies includes technical support for the 2,600-kilometer network. Huawei penetrated the Venezuela market in July 1999. CANTV is one of the major telecommunications providers in Venezuela. It has more than 2.9 million access lines in service, more than 2.7 million cellular phone subscribers, and more than 325,000 Internet subscribers. Besides CANTV, the other Venezuelan firms...
