Peru finally gets rid of costly charges.(discount from Telefonica del Peru S.A.)(Brief Article)

Latin America Telecom, July, 2005

Effective June 1, Peruvian consumers will see significant savings in their phone bills, when they will no longer have to pay for access charges when establishing a call.

One minute calls will have a discount of up to 50 percent, while calls averaging three minutes will cost 25 percent less compared to 2004, according to Michael Duncan, the director of residential telephony at Telefonica del Peru.

The savings comes from the elimination of a tax charged when establishing a call, established back in 1998 by telecom regulator Osiptel.

The tax was the equivalent of the rate for one minute despite the duration of the call.
