Tyco Telecommunication awarded contract to perform second upgrade on Telefonica's South American undersea fiber-optic network.(ACROSS THE REGION)

Telefonica International Wholesale Services and Tyco Telecommunications have signed a contract for a network upgrade of Telefonica's undersea fiber-optic ring network that connects Central, North, and South America. The network, which Tyco Telecommunications constructed for Telefonica in 2001, is composed of 12 landing stations connecting the United States, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Brazil, and Argentina on the East Coast of South America, and Chile, Peru, and Guatemala along the West Coast of South America.
This is the second time Telefonica is upgrading this System. The main objective of this second upgrade will be to increase capacity between the system's major traffic points, while eliminating the need for signal regeneration at the intermediate stations. To...
