With the explosive popularity of digital imaging and consumer "do it yourself" photofinishing, there are many new commercial inkjet printers and photo papers on the market. These products boast "photo quality," and may seem like a panacea for many digital imaging professionals.

Yet, while photos printed with these products may initially look good, will they last? This is a question currently plaguing printer, ink, and paper suppliers, as well as consumers who have been burned by photos gone bad. "Image permanence," or the capability of images to last, is a hot issue. If inks fade or change color, it can detract hugely from the appearance and the perceived quality of the products you are marketing.
