The founder of the BBC pensioners association has called for a letter campaign to encourage better payments for retired members.

Colin Fisher, who left the association at the last annual general meeting, said members should be bombarding Rhos Roberts, the BBC pension scheme manager, with letters demanding not only a pension uplift but also the company accounts and the three-year actuarial valuation.

His anger stems from the figures in the annual report this month that revealed that under FRS17 the BBC pension scheme surplus had fallen by GBP7bn in the past year (PW 22.7.02). Despite a 60% drop in value since March 2000, the BBC still maintained almost GBP1bn in surplus.
