A leading pensions consultant has attacked calls for compulsion on the eve of the Trades Union Congress annual convention.

This week the congress will hear calls from unions for compulsion to be introduced into the UK pensions system and launch a major new pensions campaign with compulsion as a central theme (see page 5).

Mercer Human Resource Consulting (MHRC) said compulsion would not solve the current problem of UK pension provision and criticised the TUC for calling for compulsory pension contributions.

European partner at MHRC, Matthew Demwell, said that whatever the minimum contribution may be, it would not be enough for some.
