Fund manager Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) is entering deeper into the asset-backed securities market by trading in US assets backed by mortgages.

The move reflects greater use of the growing asset-backed securities market globally by fund managers.

GSAM has launched a US mortgage-backed securities portfolio which will also invest in other asset-backed securities. Asset-backed securities are backed by assets such as bank loans, mortgages and credit card debt.

Andrew Wilson, head of global fixed income and currency at GSAM, said part of the attraction offered by the sector was a diverse exposure to the fixed- income market.
