Gordon Brown's track record on pensions has come under a fresh attack, after a report revealed the cost of living for current pensioners had soared to twice the national average.

Prudential said the annual expenditure between 2002 and 2006 in homes where the main occupant is aged 65 to 74 years old increased by 9%, compared with a national of 4%. The corresponding figure for households where the main occupant is aged 75 and over is 10%.

Chris Grayling, shadow secretary for work and pensions, used the worrying figures as an opportunity to launch a fresh assault on the prime minister's handling of the UK pension system.
