Free lunch

Unsurprisingly, while in France I enjoyed a number of good lunches. Of course, none were free. This was not unexpected. What was unexpected for the first week in September was the risque exceptionnel d'incendie that the prefet of Vaucluse decreed existed - with the result that footpaths were off limit. This necessitated longer lunches. At a surprising number - with French, Belgian, Luxembourgois, German, American and Australian lunchers at adjoining tables - the subject turned to pensions. I concluded that pensions and their risks are a hot topic everywhere in the developed world.

Of course, much else was discussed, including why the prefet (apparently new to the job) had decreed there was no risque...
