Fidelity's head of defined benefit (DB) business has called on more investment consultants to offer fund management services.

In spite of the obvious competition, Martin Harris, managing director of DB business at Fidelity, claimed Mercer's recent foray into liability-driven investment (LDI), which could mark a shift in focus for the company's UK business, was positive and should be emulated by other fund managers.

He argued the move was "very positive", adding: "All consultant companies should be operating as fund managers, or at least offering investment solutions or advising on them," he says.

"There is a firm need for the advisory channel within the institutional market to be stronger."
