Simon describes it as a bright October day in 1993, on Headley Common in Surrey, when he first fell in love with the idea of being on a bike.

Being a single, twenty-something, and bravely admitting that even at such a tender age he was "increasingly prone to a middle-aged spread", he often took the decision to drive to the cafe on the common, rather than face making his own breakfast.

Having just munched through a sausage and fried egg sandwich, his attention drifted over to a bunch of noisy mountain bikers pulling into the cafe. Splattered from head to foot in mud, but looking as though they were having the best time ever, their enthusiasm emanated all the way...
