HSBC's acquisition of the Bank of Bermuda in 2003 has propelled its securities services arm closer to the big league players of custody and fund administration. The volume of alternative investments serviced by HSBC was increased by $88bn with the takeover. This new book of business contributed to significant growth in the past 12 months: total assets under custody rose from $18,690bn at the end of 2003 to about $28,000bn (E36,000bn) at 31 December 2004. Other factors boosting the bottom-line in the past year include new business wins, growth from existing clients, a broad global market upturn and favourable currency movements.
