As the Fed goes one way, the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street heads the other. All the signs are that US interest rates have topped out, while a further rate hike looks to be on the cards in the UK before the year is out.

This side of the pond, inflation fears are encouraging central bankers to put a foot on the break, whereas over the water heightening fears of recession have meant that Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke is set to take his off.

The clichA is that when the US sneezes, the rest of us catch cold. However, a slight decoupling of the UK from the US market has been observable over the past year, particularly since the market correction this may, where the S&P500 has trended down more distinctly than the FTSE100.
