It is the New Year and a third of the population is dieting. However this does not mean simply eschewing the spaghetti carbonara for a bag of lettuce. It means looking at the alternatives to the creamy carbohydrate, weighing them up and figuring out what to go for from the choice of healthy foods available. This is positive screening. Similarly, ethical fund managers use positive screening to actively seek out companies with the best social, ethical and environmental practices. This way of investing now plays a large role in how ethical managers work, as more realise the benefits of seeking out the companies that try harder to make a difference.
