The last 12 months have been a headache for healthcare investors. Although they have come to see healthcare as a defensive staple, its potential gradually increasing as the global population ages, the sector has failed to avoid the effects of market volatility. The Dow Jones World Healthcare index rose only 5.09 per cent over the last year compared with the 12.88 per cent rise seen in the Dow Jones World index. Of the 10 Dow Jones World sector indices, only financials have fared worse than healthcare, posting just 0.33 per cent growth.
