The Labour Party has appointed former City financier David Pitt-Watson as general secretary.. Oliver Shah

Mr Pitt-Watson, who founded Hermes Equity Ownership and spent spells at venture capital house 3i and consultancy McKinsey, replaced Peter Watt after he was voted in by the National Executive Committee last week.

Dianne Hayter, chair of the NEC, said: "Mr Pitt-Watson brings a breadth of experience and will be a great asset to the party in terms of political judgement and organisational management. He is taking on this key role at an important time for the party, when we face the challenge of elections in London, Wales and England."
