The onset of the latest economic chill has seen a blizzard of stimulus packages and bank bail-outs reported in the financial press, and with it an avalanche of new UK government debt, mostly issued in the form of gilts.
These have been increasingly seen as a safe place to invest, particularly following the precipitous stock market falls, the bank runs and the investment scandals that have parted us from our hard-earned cash.
