Witan's address on Queen Anne's Gate, an elegant period terrace nestled between the houses of Parliament and St James's Park, led me to expect the opulence of a Mayfair hedge fund boutique. In fact, the century-old, GBP1bn investment trust is housed in low-ceilinged upper-floor rooms conspicuously free of the luxurious trappings many fund managers like to flaunt to clients and journalists.
