William Edwards Deming was born in Sioux City, IO, on Oct. 14, 1900 and was known throughout the world as a 'quality management guru.' He preferred to be called a 'consultant of statistical studies.' Deming graduated from the University of Wyoming as an engineer in 1921 but studied mathematics for another year. He obtained a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado and a doctorate degree from Yale University in 1928. His career as a public servant began as a mathematical physicist in the Fixed Nitrogen Research Laboratory of the US Dept. of Agriculture.
