In years to come, when historians look back and wonder how the UK pensions industry developed into the 21st century, they would do well to chart Alan Smith's career.
From becoming the Prudential's first compliance officer, through to launching its first personal pensions, to advising the Institute of Actuaries over scheme wind-ups, Smith has had an eventful career.
Smith joined Prudential as a trainee actuary. It took him just three years to qualify, something he is still proud of. A number of roles followed, including compliance officer in the wake of the Financial Services Act 1986, and marketing manager, where he helped develop and launch the Pru's first personal and stakeholder pensions.
But Smith's low point at Prudential came in 1999...
