GAO recommends reconsideration of F/A-18E/F production. (General Accounting Office)

A recent report from the General Accounting Office (GAO) examines the cost effectiveness of continued development of the F/A-18E/F aircraft to replace the US Navy's F/A-18C/D and modernize the Navy's tactical aircraft fleet. The report examines whether operational deficiencies in the F/A-18C/D cited by the Navy to justify the need for the F/A-18E/F have materialized and whether the new aircraft would correct them. It also explores the extent to which the F/A-18E/F will provide an appreciable increase in operational capability over the F/A-18C/D, reviews the reliability of cost estimates and compares those estimates with the costs of alternatives to the E/F program.
