Rather than give a complicated pizza order over the phone to a stressed employee in a busy kitchen, an increasing number of Domino's customers are ordered online. The delivery company's outlet in London's Docklands, for example, now receives a fifth of orders via the web. This requires fewer staff, incurs lower costs and also encourages customers to spend more.

And, thanks partly to greater advertising spend, Domino's business continues to boom. Underlying takings at its 357 mature stores grew by a thick-crust 8.3 per cent during the past six months. The chain enjoyed particularly strong demand during the World Cup. That was despite the warm weather, which normally leads people to order less pizza.

So, although Domino's now has 428 stores in the UK...
