North Midland is celebrating its 60th birthday with record sales and profits - and has a workload worth GBP140m being carried forward. So the 21 per cent jump in the dividend is now backed by a strong balance sheet and it seems that good results are likely this year, too.

The company has achieved this growth through its own efforts, rather than through acquisitions. And, even though profit figures aren't broken down by sector, it appears that 2006's star performer was the building division, which delivered "excellent results" on sales of GBP36m.
