The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently announced it has proposed a five-year plan to the Metro Planning and Development Committee that allocates $877 million to support transit improvements, including the purchase of new hybrid electric buses.
Specifically, WMATA said it plans to purchase 455 hybrid and clean diesel buses, as well as 250 CNG buses, by fiscal year 2011.
WMATA noted that the new buses will reduce its average fleet age from almost 10 years to 7.5 by 2010.
