KSC Develops 'Earth-friendly' Fire Suppression Agent.(Kennedy Space Center)(Brief Article)

NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) recently announced it has filed a patent application for a new non-toxic, dry-powder fire suppression agent that was developed with the objectives of "preserving the ozone layer and preventing global warming."

According to KSC, the fire extinguishing agent is made of microencapsulated water, which does not evaporate into the atmosphere, making it a "more powerful suppressant that's also appropriate for the environment."

"This is providing a replacement for halons currently being used, but are banned from being manufactured because they are harmful to the environment," said KSC senior chemist Clyde Parrish. "This is a new class of fire extinguishing agents that can compete effectively against other handheld systems."...
