Wales to Provide Additional Funding for Fridge Disposal.(Brief Article)

Welsh minister for the environment Carwyn Jones recently announced that the Welsh Assembly Government plans to provide local authorities with an extra 1.75 million pounds (about $2.2 million) this financial year to help them meet European Commission (EC) requirements on domestic refrigerator disposal.

Under EC regulations adopted last January, ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) contained in both refrigerator insulation foam and coolant must be removed and treated before the appliances can be recycled or scrapped.

"It is vital that old fridges are disposed of safely and the EC regulation ensures that ozone-depleting substances are not released from them," said Jones. "It is expected that this year over 100,000 domestic fridges will be produced...
