U.S. Representatives Look to Ban PBDE Flame Retardants.(polybrominated diphenyl ether)(Brief Article)

U.S. Representatives Diana DeGette (D-CO), Hilda Solis (D-CA) and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) recently introduced the Toxic Flame Retardant Prohibition Act, designed to phase out and label polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants and their precursors.

According to the congresswomen, the measure would eliminate penta and octa PBDEs nationally, effective two years after enactment of the bill; require the EPA to identify any precursor of pentaBDE and octaBDE and phase it out within three years; and require the labeling of any product containing decaDBE, octabBDE or pentaBDE within one year of enactment.

"...[I]t is imperative that we follow California's footsteps by banning the use of pentaBDE and octaBDE nationwide," said Woolsey.
