Employment verification act introduced
Modern Casting, April, 2008
In February, the New Employee Verification Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. It would create the nation's first mandatory employment verification system, requiring all U.S. employers to electronically verify that their employees are not illegal immigrants.
The bill strengthens enforcement through enhanced penalties on employers and by referring mismatches found in Social Security numbers to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for further investigation. The bill is one of several proposals before Congress regarding employment eligibility verifications.
