High-tech thermoplastic sheet

Plastics Engineering, Nov, 2007 by Hope Molinaro

At the 2007 SPE Thermoforming Conference (September), Spartech Corp. (Clayton, Missouri, USA) presented its Royalite family of sheet products for medical and dental applications. In one noted application, Royalite sheet is used to pressure-form the exterior covering of a high-tech imaging device. Featuring low weight, high heat distortion, antimicrobial properties, and UL-V0 compliance, the thermoformed sheet is available in four standard blends plus custom formulations.

Royalite sheet uses a patented capping process to achieve specific properties such as color, gloss level, special effects, and texture. The features are formulated into a calendered cap layer that is applied following sheet extrusion. This process avoids the cost of incorporating such requirements into the substrate, the need for secondary painting, and the danger of surface distortion from extruder heat.
