Flame retardants for PUR foam

Plastics Engineering, August, 2006 by Hope Molinaro

Middlebury, Conn.-based Chemtura Corp. has .introduced Firemaster 600 and Firemaster 602 flame retardants for flexible polyurethane (PUR) foam, which offer approximately 10% greater efficiency than Firemaster 550 and 552. The products respond to increasingly stringent standards (e.g., the new Consumer Product Safety Commission standard for mattress flammability) for flame-retardant additives to flexible polyurethane foam used for cushioning in furniture, mattresses, and automotive applications.

Firemaster 600 and 602 exhibit outstanding physical property performance, such as scorch resistance and "cigarette smolder," the company says. At the same time, each has minimal effect upon foam processing, and possesses a favorable environmental profile. Firemaster 602 is specifically recommended for mechanically cooled foams.
