Back in 1989 Tesco issued a directive that all its foodstuffs suppliers should assume the responsibility for product bar-code labelling to strictly defined parameters. Suppliers that were unable to comply ran the risk of being de-listed. It did not take long for the other major retailers to follow Tesco's lead and in-house bar-code labelling perforce became an essential part of the food manufacturers' operations.
