In April 2002 the Soil Association linked with Symphony Environmental to offer its growers and farmers the opportunity of purchasing totally degradable fresh produce bags. Since its introduction the product line has proved so successful with regional producers that the Soil Association has ordered a total of 350,000 bags to meet demand. Supermarkets are now actively pursuing applications for degradable packaging in the fresh produce sector, which is good news for packaging manufacturers prepared to work with retailers. Some retailers are already introducing degradable primary packaging, initially in their organic ranges.
